Sweet Discoveries: Exploring the Magic of Spanish Gelato at Rocambolesc

Have you ever experienced the unique delight of Spanish Gelato? Until today, I hadn’t even heard of Spanish soft-serve gelato, but Rocambolesc, a gem nestled in the heart of Houston’s Uptown Park, changed that. This charming and colorful gelato and sorbet shop is no ordinary spot. With a legacy rooted in the prestigious World's 50 Best Restaurant award, Rocambolesc offers an extraordinary culinary experience, brought to life by the genius of the world-renowned pastry chef Jordi Roca, in partnership with Ignacio Torras, owner of BCN and MAD.

FRONT OF STORE

Rocambolesc’s menu is a delightful exploration of flavors, featuring six unique soft-serve gelatos, vibrant sorbets, indulgent shakes, and fresh sandwiches—just to name a few. I had the pleasure of trying a couple of their standout creations. The Oven Baked Apple Gelato was a velvety delight, crowned with decadent caramelized/baked apples, delicate mini butter cookies, and a dusting of caramelized nuts, bringing a beautiful balance of texture and flavor. But the real star for me was the Coco & Violeta, a dreamy violet sorbet layered with fresh strawberries, sweet violet marshmallows, shredded coconut, and a whimsical topping of cotton candy. Every bite was a burst of floral sweetness that danced on my palate, leaving me craving more.

COCO & VIOLETA SORBET

The menu doesn’t stop at gelato. Their freshly made sandwiches and toasts are equally tempting. I tried the Grilled Ham and Cheese Bikini, a Barcelona favorite that instantly became my go-to. Picture perfectly butter-toasted bread enveloping rich, melted Manchego cheese and savory ham, with a hint of creamy mayo, served alongside crunchy chips and fresh strawberries—a simple dish elevated to perfection.

Beyond the exceptional food, what truly sets Rocambolesc apart is its heartwarming mission. This shop is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment where individuals with intellectual disabilities have the opportunity to work, creating a welcoming and supportive space for all. This, paired with their innovative dishes, makes Rocambolesc not just a restaurant, but a meaningful experience that lingers long after the last bite.
